How to Choose the Best Pull-Down Projector Screen

When it comes to choosing the right projector screen, there are several factors you’ll need to consider:

Size: consider the size of the room, and the size of the wall where the screen will be. The screen must fit the space: measure the room, including the room depth. Use a diagonal screen size that’s equal to or less than the distance from the closest seating point to the surface of the screen.

Some of the most common screen sizes are 60”, 72”, 96”, 120”, 140” and 170”. But remember to consider the distance the audience will need to sit away from the screen; here are a couple of examples:

  • Viewing distance for a screen size for 1080 p projector is 1 ½ x the diagonal screen size: ex. 120” diagonal screen = seating is best at least 15 ft away.
  • Viewing distance for a 4K projector: 1 x the diagonal screen size = seating is best at least 10 ft away

Keep in mind these are ideal distances from the screen. In other words, this is a recommendation. You may not be able to achieve these exact parameters. Just make sure the screen size fits the room and the seats are not too close to the screen for viewers’ comfort.

Type of screen: there are different types of screens to choose from, but generally they are:

  • Fixed: mounted to the wall and stay in one place.
  • Retractable: comes down when you need it, goes back up when you’re finished.  Retractable can be either manual or electric (with a small motor that rolls the screen back up).

Screen material: you’ll find screens generally come in two different textures. Some screens are smooth, while others are gritty. If you have an 1080p projector (or less), then a smooth screen will work just fine. These pulldown projector screens are more affordable and will work great.

If you have a 4K projector, then you’ll want to go with a gritty screen. This is because the gritty texture of the screen displays more detail and depth to the images. This type of screen will be more expensive and doesn’t work well with less than a 4K projector.

Gain: this is the amount of light that’s reflected from the screen back at the viewer. A higher gain means more light will be reflected, resulting in a brighter picture. Keep in mind that as gain goes up, the viewing angle goes down. This will factor into how the seating should be arranged.

Color: a white screen displays the brightest picture, but contrast between light and dark will suffer. White is better for a projector that doesn’t throw a very bright light.

On the other hand, a grey screen is better at handling darker tones, but the picture won’t be quite as bright. When using a grey screen, it’s best to use a projector that’s throwing a brighter picture. Grey screens are also better at handling ambient light, as they won’t reflect as much, so can work better in a room that has more natural light.

Screen Aspect ratio: this is the width to the height of the screen. It’s important to sync the aspect ratio of the screen to the aspect ratio of the projector in order to have a more brilliant, crisp image.

You may also find screens made for specific uses such as a perforated screen that can be used if speakers will be placed behind the screen. There are also specialized screens to use in extra bright rooms.

Keep in mind, too, that your screen will need to be a few feet off the flow to provide the best viewing angle for viewers. And it’s best to keep at least one foot of space from the top of the screen to the ceiling. This makes the viewing angle more comfortable, so no one has to crane their neck to see the screen.

These are some of the best pull-down projector screens available. Plus, the projector screens on our list come in at various price points, so you’re sure to find the best one for your home theater, business, or even your classroom.
