Do you love listening to music with your Amazon Echo? It’s great just to ask Alexa to play your favorite tunes but finding your songs can be tedious if you have to endless scroll on your smartphone screen. What if there was a way to make this process easier?

You’ll be happy to hear that there is an easier way, which involves creating playlists! In this article, we’ll share the steps to create playlists of your favorite music. We’ll keep it easy—don’t worry!

Please note that before you can get started, it’s necessary to have a streaming service that’s compatible with your Echo device. This includes Amazon Prime or another streaming service. OK—now, let’s start getting Alexa setup!

1). Sign Up to a Streaming Music Service

We already mentioned you’ll need a music streaming service to create playlists with your Amazon Echo. This device works with Amazon Music, Apple Music, SiriusXM, Pandora, Tidal and Spotify streaming services. With one of these services, you’ll be able to setup playlists of your favorite music, tunes for special occasions, parties and more.

If you’re an Amazon Prime member, then you can already access over 2 million songs, along with thousands of pre-created playlists to choose from. Another option is to sign up with Amazon Music Unlimited, which gives you access to a music library of over 50 million songs.

The best thing about Amazon’s streaming services is that they are supported by the Echo, and they have no advertisements. Plus, you can play each song as often as you’d like.

If you already have a streaming service you really like, then you’ll need to activate the use of this service through the Alexa app.

2). Sync Your Streaming Service through the Alexa App

If you’re already using one of Amazon’s music streaming services, you can skip this step and go down to step #3. Otherwise, remain here and we’ll explain how to setup your service through the Alexa app.

On your tablet or smartphone, open the Alexa app, then head to the settings folder. Look for Alexa Preferences, and choose music. This is where you link your music streaming service with your Amazon Echo device. If you’re an Apple Music subscriber, you can do this by enabling the “Apple Music” in the Alexa up and linking your account.

Next, you’ll need to add in your external music account details. Then these details will be saved, and you won’t have to deal with them again!

3). Begin Creating Playlists

Now you’re ready to start creating playlists of your favorite tunes. You can create as many playlists as you’d like—there are no limits! It’s possible to create playlists for your daily activities. For instance, you might create a list of calming music for the daily commute, have energizing music for exercising or walking the dog, soothing music to help you fall asleep, and more.

To create a playlist, just say this to your Echo device, “Alexa, create a new playlist.” Alexa will then confirm that you made this request and ask what you’d like to name the new playlist. Be sure to clearly say the name of your list out loud. Once it’s created, you’ll be able to add songs.

One thing to keep in mind is that it’s not possible to just add the music by telling Alexa to add a specific song title. This can’t be done by verbal commands. You’ll need to do this when playing the song’s playing.

Once the song’s playing that’s when you tell the Echo device, “Alexa, add this song to my (insert the name of your playlist) playlist.” You don’t even have to know the name of the song. As long as it’s playing Alexa can add it to the specific playlist you request. This is a great feature when you’re listening to a new song and don’t know the name. Alexa can easily and quickly add this new music to the playlist you request.

Another way to add music to your play lists is through the Amazon Music App. This app is available for both iOS and Android devices. You can also go directly to the Amazon Music website and edit playlists, as well as add new songs.

For songs on external streaming services, you’ll need to add the songs manually using your preferred service (Apple Music, Spotify, etc.). It’s not possible to create playlists for external services with Alexa. This is a feature that’s not supported at this time.

4). Enjoy Your Playlists

Once you’ve created your playlists, just use this command with your Amazon Echo, “Alexa, play my (insert playlist name) playlist.” This command works for all the playlists created on Amazon Music.

For your external music streaming services, you’ll need to say, “Alexa, play my (name of the playlist) playlist on (streaming service name).”

Once you have this function set up on your Echo, you’ll be able to add songs to any of your playlists at any time. Just use the commands outlined here to add a new song. This is a great way to setup different playlists for different occasions, relaxing, and more.

One More Note

Other people in family or household can also add playlists to Alexa! This is great if you have kids; they can enjoy their favorite music any time such as when they’re playing or relaxing.

And you might even find music to play for your cat or dog while you’re away from home during the day. Just be sure to include enough music to cover the time you’ll be gone. Choose relaxing, calming, and soothing music for pets who have a hard time being home alone.

Playlists are a wonderful way to organize and create customized lists of your favorite music. If you have Amazon music streaming services, there’s no need to use your phone all the time. Just let Alexa know you’d like to add the song that’s currently playing. Be sure to let her know which playlist and she’ll save it for you! It’s that easy!
