Some of these newer movies just don’t hit like the old ones. Sometimes it’s good to go back and rewatch an old classic. Not only are these movies nostalgic to a lot of us, but they’re arguably better than a lot of movies that are being released nowadays. Luckily movie streaming platforms such as Netflix can provide us with all the throwback films we desire! So without further ado, here are some of the best old movies on Netflix.

Jaws

Everybody knows about this one. Probably the most iconic thing about the Jaws movie would be its theme song which everyone loves! It’s undoubtedly one of the best old movies on Netflix. Jaws was released in 1975, it totally revolutionised cinema and is widely regarded as one of the most brilliant old-fashioned films that were made. It’s also one of the most financially successful films ever made. Now don’t get us wrong, the difference in quality is night and day. If a movie about a killer shark was made now it would definitely be a lot more realistic, but you must appreciate this movie for what it is. An animatronic shark was used for the film and back then, the public hadn’t really seen anything like it before. Not only was it petrifying to everyone, but it was also absolutely fascinating as well! There’s no question why Jaws was such a massive hit, not only is Jaws one of the best old movies on Netflix but it’s one of the best movies in general. It’s worth noting that you might not want to watch this movie if you have a weak stomach! Oh, and make sure to watch on a large flat screen TV.

Boyz in the Hood

Here’s another brilliant classic movie. While this one may not be as well-known as Jaws, it’s just as good! If you are familiar with the rapper and actor Ice Cube, then you’ve most likely already seen this one. This movie is iconic for being the first time Ice Cube broke into the acting industry and it was a massive success. “Boyz in the Hood” tells the story of a few young boys growing up in a Los Angeles ghetto. Although, the neighbourhood is very dangerous and is notorious for gang violence. The main character in the movie is Tre. He  grows older during the film and finds himself caught up in the gang violence that many others in his neighbourhood do. With wise advice and guidance from his father, Tre tries to stay out of trouble and amount to something better.

Matilda

If you’re looking for something a little more light-hearted, then Matilda might be one of the best old movies to watch on Netflix. The story follows a little girl with a nasty family who don’t pay much attention to her. The girl is very gifted and intelligent for her age and begins walking to the library every day while her parents leave her in the house alone. Matilda keeps smiling through everything and soon begins primary school. Her primary school teacher quickly realises how clever she is and even suggests that she should be in a higher class. Soon enough, things start to get crazy, and she starts to realise that she has superpowers! This movie is a very wholesome one and would be great to watch with the family. For some of us that were around when it was released, it probably makes you feel old seeing this movie on the list!

Scarface

This movie is widely regarded as one of the best gangster films of all time, it’s got a pretty long run time but every second of it is pure gold. Considering how long ago this movie was made, This old school gangster film still totally lives up to today’s standards. If you’re into movies like these you’ll know you can watch them over and over again. The movie follows a man named Tony, a Cuban refugee. Tony turns to a life of crime and becomes obsessed with power in the dangerous drug business. The movie follows Tony making his way to the top from nothing, all leading up to one of the most iconic and shocking endings we have ever seen. You can’t list the best old movies on Netflix and not mention “Scarface”.

Saving Private Ryan

Saving Private Ryan must be one of Tom Hanks’s greatest movies, so it’s one of the best old movies on Netflix without a doubt. This movie follows the story of a group of US soldiers going on a rescue mission for a paratrooper during WW2. The movie is insanely realistic which is what makes it so great. Saving Private Ryan captures the brutality of war with an emotional storyline. If you haven’t seen the movie, then you’re lucky to be able to watch it for the first time because of how iconic it is! This movie is definitely worth putting on your Netflix list.
